Do female amphibians and reptiles have greater reproductive output if they have more mates?

چکیده

Abstract In general, males mate with multiple females to increase individual reproductive success. Whether or not, and under what circumstances, benefit from mating has been less clear. Our review of 154 studies covering 184 populations amphibians reptiles showed that polyandry was widespread variable among within taxonomic groups. We investigated whether amphibian reptile had greater output as the number sires for offspring increased. Meta-analysis revealed significant heterogeneity in dataset all taxa. Expected heterozygosity a moderator (covariate) positive relationships between female sires, but sensitivity test result tenuous. Significant remained despite controlling expected other variables resolved most groups subgroup meta-analyses. Subgroup meta-analyses only salamanders (Caudata) significantly an increased sires. For many species Caudata, cannot coerce into accepting spermatophores. therefore suggest if control matings, they can use their fitness. Caudata offers ideal models which this hypothesis explore factors enabling maintaining evolution choice. Outstanding problems may be addressed by expanding coverage data collection improving reporting. Significance Statement Many combinations drive polyandry. not more than one male remains equivocal. Focusing on reptiles, our analyses demonstrate produced when mated males, whereas case reptiles. Unlike dataset, polyandrous fully sperm intake have chosen times. further highlight key directions future research field.

What Do They Have in Common?

Type 1 and type 2 diabetes frequently co-occur in the same families, suggesting common genetic susceptibility. Such mixed family history is associated with an intermediate phenotype of diabetes: insulin resistance and cardiovascular complications in type 1 diabetic patients and lower BMI and less cardiovascular complications as well as lower C-peptide concentrations in type 2 diabetic patients....

Hybrid Procedures, Do They Have a Role?

A hybrid strategy is a combination of catheter-based therapy and traditional surgical intervention. This concept of combining the tools available only in the catheterization laboratory with the tools available only to the surgeon in order to minimize surgical morbidity has evolved since its implementation in the 1990s.1 Over the past decade, with advancement in stent technology and refinement o...
